When I think of the medieval centuries, the Knights of the Round Table and King Arthur come to mind. Chivalry was a big thing and knights were constantly being sent on quests to save fair maidens from all sorts of dangers – Dragons, Witches, and evil Sorcerers to name a few!
Although busy saving Damsels-in-Distress, knights also found time
to let their pages take care of the heavy armor, chain mail, swords and other weapons used in battle. This left time to enjoy the lavish banquets the Kings and Lords provided. I imagine there was time for courting the Princesses and fair Maidens within the castle.
At Halloween parties the heavy gear is out, but the lighter weight tunics, a coif or some kind of period headgear and a wide belt to hold a scabbard for your sword and knife are a good outfit.
Many Costumes from the Renaissance Era include tights and hosiery beneath short vests and tunics for the men and fashionable gowns and dresses in every social level, from Royalty to Peasant. The bright colors and fabric variety give you many choices. The men used padding in the belly and shoulders which looks strange to me, but I quess the Ladies-in-Waiting found it sexy. Who knew!
Women – as always – had a harder time of it. They laced themselves up in corsets and tight bodices to achieve tiny waists and heightened bosums. Layer upon layer of skirts, petticoats and ruffled collars provided the finishing touches. They must have started on Friday for the Sunday gala!
There are less demanding adult costumes for both sexes. While not as regal as the Kings and Queens, Troubadours and Jesters were welcome at every event, and commoners had there own style of dressup. Colorful characters, such as Witches, Serving Wenches and Gypsies provided welcome diversions from mundane day-to-day activities. I’ve been fan of the Medieval era since I was a boy. I have often wished to have been born in that time. Your costumes are fantastic and remind me once again of dreamy days of my youth.
I love the Fair Maiden Grand Heritage costume. That color of red is so pretty, especially with the gold detailing in the front. These are all great renaissance costumes.
Got to admit that I’ve loved the medieval era ever since Robin Hood, King Arthur and Merlin. Reckon William tell may have had a hand in it as well.
Must say that the women in that era looked pretty good which just goes to show that you don’t always have to bare all to be appreciated by the opposite sex.
